RUGBY

Many believed that rugby was born in 1823 when William Webb Ellis "with fine disregard for the rules of football (soccer) as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the Rugby game". Previously, the rules had only allowed the ball to be kicked. The modern game of rugby dated back from the 1860s, when it was adopted and modified by other English schools and universities. In 1871, the English Rugby Union was formed to standardize the rules.

The game is played with an oval ball, blunter in shape than the American football so that it may easily be bounced and drop-kicked—that is, kicked on the rebound.

The Rugby Section is affiliated to the Singapore Rugby Union and participates in the National Rugby Championships. The Under-17 team finished as Cup Champions two years running, with a handful of national players contributing to the success. The Men’s Division 1 and 2 teams finished second in the Cup Playoffs last year.

We also have a Ladies team with six girls in the National Development Squad and two girls who were selected to represent Singapore in the Hong Kong Ladies this year.
