3rd Ambassadors’ SRC Charity Soccer Fiesta
‘Mini World Cup’ On The Padang Returns

5 March 2007 – The Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) today announced that it would be organising the 3rd Ambassadors’ SRC Soccer Charity Fiesta on Saturday, 10 March 2007 at the Padang, from 8am to 6pm.

Billed as a mini “World Cup” on the Padang, the event brings together the diplomatic community in Singapore through soccer, a carnival and gala dinner to raise funds for: Family Life Centre, Henderson Senior Citizens’ Home (through Chinese Women’s Association), Ren Ci Hospital & Medicare Centre and the Singapore Heart Foundation.

Currently, through the sale of funfair tickets, advertisement in a souvenir magazine and gala dinner tickets, an estimated sum of $138,000 has been raised for the beneficiaries. The President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan, is the Guest of Honour for the gala dinner and will present cheques to the beneficiaries.

Highlights of the 3rd Ambassadors’ SRC Soccer Charity Fiesta

24 5-a-side teams from foreign embassies, high commissions and consulates based in Singapore are fielding teams in the Embassy category, where past winners have included Thailand and Brazil. A further 49 teams will be competing in Women’s and Kids’ categories.

Flagging of this event is Assoc Prof Ho Peng Kee, Senior Minister of State for Law & Home Affairs, who aptly enough, is the President of the Football Association of Singapore. Other ministers who will be present include, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs & Information, Communication and the Arts, Dr Balaji Sadasivan, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of National Development, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman and Member of Parliament, Ang Mo Kio GRC, Ms Lee Bee Wah. Once again, Members of Parliament have been invited to field a “celebrity” team to play against the SRC President’s selection.

Aside from soccer, the event promises an afternoon of fun for the whole family. SRC members will be setting up fun-fair booths on the Padang - where tickets can still be purchased on-site. Members of the public can look forward to the many food and game stalls. Prizes will also be up for grabs where one lucky person will stand a chance to walk away with a pair of tickets to Australia.

This year, together with The Crystal Mirror, SRC has managed to raise a majority of the funds from the sale of gala dinner tickets. A sold out event, this dinner cum theatre show will see the attendance of the following ministers: Speaker of Parliament, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs & Information, Communication and the Arts, Dr Balaji Sadasivan and Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of National Development, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman. Gracing this event is Guest of Honour, President S R Nathan.
