Singapore Cricket Club

Ten trophies and the coveted Padang Shield were up for grabs once again as we met our friendly rivals for the prestigious bi-annual Padang event. This time around, Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) played host and their sporting warriors gave us a hard fight, winning four out of the ten games that were played. At the end of the day though, SRC emerged Champion despite closely fought competitions, belting five victories and a tie!

Our Golfers gave us the lead when they overcame their SCC opponents 5.5 to 4.5 the previous day at the Keppel Club. The match was based on ten pairs with the highest Stableford points scored, with the SRC Golfers emerging victors.

SCC then reclaimed the Cricket trophy with a one-point lead when they beat our cricketers in a close match. Despite the home ground advantage, our team was not able to repeat their amazing runs, which gave them the victory the last time.

The Soccer team also put up a gallant effort but was unable to break through the solid line of SCC’s defence. Our team defended equally well but the opposing strikers were a step faster and managed to score twice.

The clear size advantage of the SCC Rugby team did not intimidate our rugby boys and they gave a splendid fight throughout the game. However hard-pressed and physically drenched, they finally admitted defeat as the referee blew the final whistle with SCC winning 58-14.

The Ladies’ Hockey team almost drew level but their late equalising goal was disallowed and thus the final score stayed at 2-1, in favour of SCC. Meanwhile, the biggest upset was when our Men’s Hockey Team drew 2-2 with the host. Indeed, it was one of the most thrilling matches of the day filled with displays of skills and emotions!

Our Darters showcased their excellence once more as they dominated the match, winning nine games to none! Likewise, our Snooker team clinched a clear 5-2 victory over their opponents. Our Balut team continued the winning streak and it was a close fight with our team coming out tops with a final score of 9054!   

At the end of the day, it came down to the tiebreaker match between the clubs’ Tennis Mixed Doubles teams. Already tied at 2-2, victory for this match literally decides the overall winner of the Padang Shield 2008. In front of a packed SCC clubhouse, our Tennis team volleyed home the victory, securing the Padang Shield for SRC!

SRC salutes our Sporting warriors for the blood and sweat they shed to retain the prestigious Padang Shield! We now look forward to hosting the next event in 2010!

We will be better. We will be stronger. We shall win it again!
